location: grants pass, or
services: site master planning, analysis and design, open space planning and design, landscape architecture analysis and design, streetscape planning and design, riparian and shoreline restoration planning and design, renderings, construction and bid document preparation, specifications, cost estimating, and construction administration.
program: This mixed-use site adjacent to the Rogue River in Grants Pass Oregon is nestled between the major east and westbound transportation corridors through downtown. The project program included a themed restaurant and hotel complex as part of the ‘Hellgate Jet Boat Tours” Company, one of the largest tourist attractions in the State of Oregon. The site program included large pedestrian open space & multi-use event venues with an 8 ft wide, multi-modal path as part of an initial phase of the Grants Pass Riverwalk Promenade. A simulated native stream with waterfalls, a pedestrian bridge, overlooks, and native American totems highlighted this gateway to Grants Pass. With over 1700 lf of river frontage the SEPA, NEPA, flood plane, endangered species, and other issues made the development and bank stabilization on this site a true stormwater management challenge.
innovative design: Working with a variety of local, State and Federal agencies we were able to come up with embankment plans for both the vegetated portions of the riverbank and the armored boat dock and pedestrian facilities that occurred within the flood plane. In an effort to rusticate and naturalize the dock and ped areas adjacent to the riverbank, we selected a material & finishing detail that would replicate Rogue River geology. We designed and detailed thousands of square feet of steel reinforced, structurally anchored, faux boulder scaping, like zoo habitat, in areas that were prone to flooding with large, fast moving objects in the water during storm surges. Setbacks and penetrations that caused displacement of river volume had to be carefully calculated and approved prior to permitting. The majority of on-site stormwater is collected and mechanically lifted to a highpoint where it is treated in vegetated swales and settlement ponds and then discharged into the river.
